Archbishop Bergan offers the opportunity for high school students (grades 7-12) to compete in various speech events. The goals of Speech are to encourage students in self-expression and creativity while helping them develop and improve their communication skills, vocal expression, bodily responsiveness and poise. Additionally, speech helps students become more self-disciplined and allows them to experience social growth through meeting new people, going to new places and learning new ideas through these shared learning experiences.
Students are able to compete in up to 2 different speech events. The various Speech events include:
- Persuasive Speaking
- Entertainment Speaking
- Extemporaneous Speaking
- Informative Public Speaking
- Oral Interpretation of Poetry
- Oral Interpretation of Drama
- Oral Interpretation of Humorous Prose Literature
- Oral Interpretation of Serious Prose Literature
- Duet Acting
Speech typically runs from late Fall through the Winter for competitions with District Speech for Archbishop Bergan in mid-March followed by State Speech in late March.
